About Ōtani Oniji III as Edobei
Created in 1794, Ōtani Oniji III as Edobei is one of the most famous actor prints in the history of ukiyo-e.
The artwork portrays the kabuki actor Ōtani Oniji III performing the role of Edobei, a servant character known for his cunning and villainous nature. Sharaku captured the actor at a moment of intense dramatic expression, emphasizing psychological tension rather than idealized beauty.
The exaggerated hands, piercing eyes, and dynamic posture became defining characteristics of Sharaku’s style. Today, the image is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of Japanese portrait art and remains instantly recognizable around the world.
About Tōshūsai Sharaku
Tōshūsai Sharaku was an ukiyo-e artist active for only a brief period between 1794 and 1795, yet he produced some of the most influential actor portraits in Japanese art history.
Very little is known about his life, and his true identity remains one of the great mysteries of Japanese art. Despite his short career, Sharaku revolutionized ukiyo-e portraiture through bold realism, psychological depth, and dramatic characterization.
Today, his works are treasured by museums, collectors, and scholars worldwide.
Japanese Ukiyo-e Art
Ukiyo-e, meaning “pictures of the floating world,” is one of Japan’s most influential art forms. Flourishing during the Edo period (1603–1868), ukiyo-e woodblock prints captured scenes of daily life, landscapes, actors, warriors, and legendary tales with remarkable detail and artistic expression.
Today, ukiyo-e remains admired worldwide and continues to inspire collectors, artists, and enthusiasts across generations.
