About Kanjinchō

Kanjinchō is one of the most famous and beloved plays in Kabuki theater. It belongs to the prestigious collection known as the Kabuki Jūhachiban (Kabuki Eighteen Plays), a group of classic works closely associated with the Ichikawa Danjūrō acting lineage.

The story centers on the legendary warrior Benkei and his lord Minamoto no Yoshitsune as they attempt to pass through a guarded checkpoint. Through courage, intelligence, and dramatic sacrifice, the play explores themes of loyalty, honor, and devotion.

Today, Kanjinchō remains one of the defining masterpieces of Japanese theater and continues to be performed on Kabuki stages throughout Japan.
