About Kyoto Sanjō Ōhashi Bridge

Kyoto Sanjō Ōhashi Bridge depicts the famous bridge crossing the Kamo River in Kyoto, traditionally regarded as the western terminus of the Tōkaidō, the most important highway connecting Edo (modern Tokyo) and Kyoto during the Edo period.

The print captures travelers, merchants, and local residents moving across the bridge, reflecting the vibrant activity and cultural significance of Kyoto. Through careful composition and atmospheric detail, Hiroshige transformed an everyday scene into a timeless portrait of Japanese life and travel.

Today, the image remains a celebrated example of Japanese landscape art and an enduring symbol of Kyoto’s rich cultural heritage.

About Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the greatest masters of ukiyo-e landscape prints.

Best known for series such as The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, Hiroshige captured Japan’s scenery with remarkable sensitivity and poetic atmosphere. His innovative use of perspective and color influenced generations of artists both in Japan and abroad, including many European Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.

His works remain among the most admired examples of Japanese art worldwide.

Japanese Ukiyo-e Art

Ukiyo-e, meaning “pictures of the floating world,” is one of Japan’s most influential art forms. Flourishing during the Edo period (1603–1868), ukiyo-e woodblock prints captured scenes of daily life, landscapes, actors, warriors, and legendary tales with remarkable detail and artistic expression.

Today, ukiyo-e remains admired worldwide and continues to inspire collectors, artists, and enthusiasts across generations.
